Description
Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited is hiring a skilled Automobile Technician to support its large-scale sugar production operations in Lugazi. This role focuses on maintaining and repairing heavy agricultural and transport equipment used in sugarcane harvesting and haulage.
In real work terms, you will spend most of your time in the workshop and in the field fixing tractors, trailers, and cane loading machines. When a machine breaks down, production slows. Your job is to diagnose the problem fast, fix it correctly, and return the equipment to operation.
This role suits someone who enjoys hands-on mechanical work, understands heavy machinery, and can work under pressure during peak harvesting periods.
- Key Responsibilities
You will handle repair and maintenance of New Holland tractors used in sugarcane fields. This includes engine work, hydraulic systems, and routine servicing.
You will inspect and repair cane haulage trailers. These trailers carry heavy loads, so you will check for mechanical faults, brake issues, and structural wear.
You will work on cane loading machines such as Cameco, John Deere, Bell, and Uttam. These machines are critical in loading harvested cane onto trucks. You will troubleshoot faults, replace worn parts, and ensure they operate efficiently.
You will perform regular servicing to prevent breakdowns. This includes oil changes, part replacements, and system checks.
You will respond to emergency breakdowns in the field. Quick response is important to avoid delays in harvesting and transport.
You will keep basic maintenance records and report recurring issues to supervisors. This helps improve long-term equipment performance.
- Requirements and Qualifications
You must have a Diploma or Advanced Certificate in Automobile Engineering. This gives you the technical foundation to handle heavy machinery.
You need five to seven years of hands-on experience working with tractors and heavy equipment. Experience with New Holland tractors and cane machinery is highly valuable.
You should understand diesel engines, hydraulics, and mechanical systems. These are core parts of agricultural machines.
You must be able to diagnose faults quickly and carry out repairs with minimal supervision.
You should be physically fit and ready to work in workshop and field conditions.
Basic record keeping skills are useful for tracking repairs and maintenance work.
- Salary Range Estimate
Expected range, UGX 1,200,000 to UGX 2,500,000 per month.
The final salary depends on your experience and technical skill level. Some roles may include overtime pay or field allowances during peak seasons.
- About the Company
Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited is one of the largest sugar producers in Uganda. It is part of the Mehta Group, which has operations in several industries.
The company runs large plantations and processing plants. It relies heavily on machinery for planting, harvesting, and transporting sugarcane. This creates strong demand for skilled technicians who can keep operations running smoothly.
Working here exposes you to large-scale industrial and agricultural equipment. It is a good environment for technicians who want to grow their experience in heavy machinery.
- Location Breakdown
The job is based in Lugazi, Buikwe District, about 45 kilometers from Kampala along the Kampala Jinja highway.
Lugazi is an industrial town with lower living costs compared to Kampala. Many workers either stay within the company premises or commute from nearby areas.
The location offers stable work opportunities because of the large plantation and factory operations. Expect a mix of workshop work and field assignments in sugarcane estates.
- How to Apply, Smart Tips
Prepare a CV that clearly shows your experience with tractors and heavy machinery. List specific machines you have worked on such as New Holland, John Deere, or similar equipment.

Knowledge of multiple machine brands gives you an advantage. Employers prefer flexible technicians.
Show willingness to work in field conditions. This role is not limited to the workshop.
