Description
- This role of GIS Technician at Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited focuses on collecting, verifying, and updating electricity network data from the field. The work involves visiting different sites where power lines, transformers, and related infrastructure are located, then capturing accurate geographic and technical information using digital tools and handheld GIS devices.
In real terms, you will act as the link between what is physically on the ground and what is recorded in the company systems. Your work ensures engineers and planners can make correct decisions when expanding, maintaining, or fixing the electricity distribution network. You will spend a large part of your time in the field inspecting assets, mapping new installations, and confirming the condition of existing equipment.
- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Collect and update GIS data for electricity network assets such as poles, transformers, and lines using approved systems and tools
• Conduct field inspections of medium voltage and low voltage infrastructure to assess condition, safety, and performance
• Identify hazards such as damaged poles, unsafe lines, and weak connections, then report them quickly for action
• Capture accurate geospatial coordinates of new and existing network installations using handheld GIS devices
• Support field surveys used for planning new electricity projects and network upgrades
• Record new line extensions and any modifications made to the existing network
• Assist in scoping exercises for upcoming projects to help engineers understand site conditions before work begins
• Prepare clear field reports summarizing findings, risks, and recommendations from inspections
• Ensure all assigned equipment and tools are used responsibly and kept in good condition
• Work closely with GIS Officers and engineering teams to maintain reliable network records - REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Diploma in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution
This gives you the technical foundation to understand power distribution systems and how electrical infrastructure is structured in the field.
• At least 2 years of experience in the power distribution sector
Experience in operations and maintenance is preferred because it helps you understand real field challenges such as outages, faults, and repairs.
• Practical experience in GIS data collection
You should be familiar with mobile GIS tools such as Esri ArcPad or similar Android based field data collection applications. This ensures you can capture accurate location data while working in remote areas.
• Strong understanding of electricity distribution networks
You should recognize key components like transformers, feeders, distribution lines, and understand how they function together.
• Good IT skills
Ability to use digital tools, tablets, GPS devices, and basic data systems for reporting and mapping work.
• Good reporting and communication skills
You must clearly document field findings in simple, structured reports that engineers can act on.
• Willingness to work across Uganda
The role requires travel and deployment to different regions depending on project needs.
- SALARY RANGE (EXPECTED RANGE)
For a GIS Technician role in a national electricity distribution utility in Uganda, the expected monthly salary range is between 1,200,000 UGX and 2,800,000 UGX.
The exact figure depends on experience, technical GIS competency, and field deployment requirements. Allowances for fieldwork and transport may apply depending on assignment location. - ABOUT THE COMPANY
Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited operates as a key national utility responsible for distributing electricity across Uganda. The company plays a central role in maintaining and expanding the power network that supports homes, businesses, schools, and industries.
Working in this environment means exposure to large scale engineering operations, structured reporting systems, and strict safety standards. Employees often work in multidisciplinary teams involving engineers, technicians, and project planners. The work culture is field driven, technical, and focused on improving electricity access across the country.
- LOCATION BREAKDOWN
The duty station is referred to as Duty Area, meaning deployment can happen anywhere in Uganda depending on operational needs.
Most assignments are field based and may include urban areas like Kampala as well as rural districts where network expansion and maintenance projects are active. Kampala offers easier access to transport, accommodation, and services, while upcountry deployments may involve more travel and remote working conditions.
The role demands adaptability because working conditions vary between dense urban infrastructure and rural electrification zones.
- HOW TO APPLY (SMART TIPS)
Prepare a CV that clearly highlights your field experience in electrical systems and GIS data collection. Use simple language but focus on results you achieved in previous roles.
Include keywords such as GIS mapping, ArcPad, network asset data, field survey, and electrical distribution systems. These improve visibility during recruitment screening.
Show practical experience rather than theory. For example, mention specific projects where you collected field data, supported maintenance teams, or participated in network surveys.
Keep your CV short, clear, and structured. Attach relevant certificates such as Diploma in Electrical Engineering and any GIS training certificates if available.
- PRO TIPS TO STAND OUT
• Emphasize hands on field experience with electricity infrastructure, not just classroom knowledge
• Show familiarity with GPS tools and mobile data collection apps used in mapping work
• Highlight safety awareness, especially working near live electrical installations
• If you have exposure to ArcGIS or similar platforms, clearly state it with examples of use - SIMILAR JOBS YOU CAN EXPLORE
• GIS Data Officer in utility or telecom companies
• Electrical Technician in power distribution or renewable energy projects
• Field Survey Technician for infrastructure or engineering firms
