About the Role

The Post-Harvesting Vanilla Expert position is critical in advancing sustainable agricultural practices among smallholder farmers in Uganda. This role focuses on enhancing vanilla cultivation by providing technical support for post-harvest processes, which are essential for maintaining the quality and marketability of vanilla. In the first few months, you will engage directly with growers and cooperatives, training them on best practices for harvesting and processing. Your expertise will not only improve the livelihoods of these farmers but also contribute to the overall sustainability of vanilla production in the region.

Key Responsibilities

• You will advise and train growers on the best practices for harvesting, curing, and storing vanilla to ensure high-quality output.
• Your role will include implementing quality control protocols and grading procedures to maintain the standards expected in the vanilla market.
• Regular field visits will be essential as you support infrastructure development for improved post-harvest handling and storage facilities.
• Collaboration with local cooperatives will be key, as you will work to strengthen their capabilities in managing vanilla post-harvest processes.
• You will collect data on post-harvest practices and outcomes to inform future training and project improvements.
• Engaging with stakeholders and facilitating workshops will help create a network for sharing knowledge and resources among vanilla farmers.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A degree in Agricultural Science, Horticulture, or a related field is essential for understanding the complexities of vanilla cultivation.
• At least 3 years of experience in agricultural extension services, particularly in post-harvest handling and quality assurance, is preferred.
• Strong communication skills are necessary to effectively train and engage with farmers and cooperatives.
• Experience with sustainable agricultural practices and knowledge of the vanilla supply chain will be beneficial.
• Proficiency in data collection and analysis to track progress and inform decision-making is an important asset.
