*6. PASSAGE:*

Lake Victoria  water plays an indispensable role in supporting life. The great basin holds about 660 cubic miles of water. From this vast amount, about 2.2 meters of water are sucked into the atmosphere each year by evaporation and returned by precipitation and drainage. More than 110,000 cubic kilometers of rain descend annually upon the continents. This vast amount is required to replenish the lakes and streams, springs, and water tables on which all the flora and fauna are dependent. Thus, the hydrosphere supports organic existence.

Water & Marine Sciences

The hydrosphere has a strange character because water has properties unlike those of the other liquids. One anomaly is that water, upon freezing, expands by 9%, whereas some liquids contract on cooling. For this reason, ice floats on water bodies instead of sinking to the bottom. If the ice sank, the hydrosphere would soon be frozen solidly except for the thin layer of surface meltwater during the dry season. Thus, all the aquatic life would be destroyed, and the interchange of warm and cold currents, which moderates climate, would be notably absent.

Another characteristic of water is that water has heat capacity that is highest of all liquids and solids except ammonia; these characteristics enable the water bodies to absorb and release vast quantities of heat. Thereby preventing climate extremes. In addition, water dissolves more substances than any other liquid. It is these characteristics which help make oceans a great storehouse for minerals which have been washed down from the continents. In several areas of the world, these materials are being commercially exploited. Evaporation of salt is widely practiced.

*ii)* According to the passage, fish can survive in water because

– They do not need oxygen

– Evaporation and condensation create the water cycle

– There are currents in the water body

– Ice floats

–  Water absorbs heat

*iii)* Which of the following characteristics of water does the author mention in the passage?

  1. i) water expands when it is frozen
  2. ii) water is a good solvent

iii) water can absorb heat
