About the Role

The Nutritionist position at Medical Teams Uganda plays a crucial role in enhancing community health through effective nutritional management. This role is dedicated to coordinating and leading nutrition initiatives in various health facilities and local communities. In the first few months, you will immerse yourself in the daily operations of nutrition clinics, ensuring that outreach activities are aligned with medical services. You will also focus on building relationships with facility staff and community teams to foster a collaborative environment that prioritizes patient care and nutritional awareness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the implementation of nutrition clinics and community outreach programs according to established facility work plans, ensuring effective integration with medical services.
  • Conduct thorough screenings for malnutrition and monitor growth metrics, taking appropriate corrective measures to support affected individuals.
  • Provide technical guidance to healthcare staff and community teams on the management of acute malnutrition, facilitating ongoing training and support.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of nutrition service activities, consolidating data for monthly reports to inform decision-making and improve program effectiveness.
  • Engage in research initiatives aimed at enhancing community health practices, contributing to evidence-based improvements in nutrition care.
  • Empower inpatients and caregivers with knowledge about proper home care and nutrition, promoting sustainable health practices.
  • Perform home visits for discharged patients to ensure compliance with nutritional advice, fostering a supportive follow-up environment.
  • Ensure the security and proper handling of food and nutrition supplies, implementing measures to prevent contamination and maintain hygiene in food preparation areas.
  • Uphold the highest standards of integrity and ethics in all nutrition practices, in accordance with Medical Teams’ conduct codes.
  • Mentor and set clear objectives for direct reports, fostering their professional growth through capacity-building opportunities.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Human Nutrition, Dietetics, or a closely related field is essential for this role.
  • At least 2 years of practical experience in the nutrition field, preferably with a busy project that implements Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM).
  • Familiarity with clinical medicine or community health practices is highly desirable.
  • Experience in emergency operations will be considered a significant advantage in this role.
  • Previous experience working with International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs) will be beneficial for understanding the operational context.
  • Strong knowledge of nutrition principles and the management of acute malnutrition is required to effectively support patients and teams.
