About the Role

The Senior Legal Officer position at Mogo Loans Limited is a pivotal role within the legal department that supports the company’s mission of providing affordable financing options in Uganda. This role is crucial as it ensures that the company’s legal interests are safeguarded while navigating the complexities of litigation and regulatory compliance. In your first few months, you will engage with various departments to understand their legal needs, assess potential risks, and develop strategies to mitigate them. You will also initiate collaboration with external counsel and manage legal disputes effectively, making a significant impact on the company’s operations and reputation.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive legal advice to management and various departments, ensuring all legal matters are addressed with precision and clarity.
• Evaluate legal risks across different business sectors and devise proactive strategies to minimize potential liabilities and protect the company’s interests.
• Draft, review, and finalize legal documents including memos, reports, and contracts to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Handle and oversee all legal disputes, particularly focusing on debt recovery cases, including drafting pleadings and developing litigation strategies.
• Represent the company in court and other legal proceedings, ensuring that the company’s rights and interests are vigorously defended.
• Collaborate effectively with external legal counsel to manage complex legal issues, ensuring that services are delivered efficiently and cost-effectively.
• Work with the debt collection team to facilitate legal proceedings, ensuring that all debt recovery operations comply with established legal protocols.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized legal institution is essential for this position.
• A Post Graduate Diploma in Law obtained from the Law Development Center is required to practice effectively.
• A current practicing certificate is necessary to ensure compliance with legal regulations in Uganda.
• At least 2-4 years of hands-on experience in a legal capacity, particularly with a focus on debt recovery cases, is expected.
• Experience in an in-house legal role or within the financial services sector will be considered a strong advantage.
