About the Role
The Senior Credit Manager position at Standard Chartered in Kampala plays a pivotal role in ensuring the bank maintains a robust credit risk management framework. This role is essential for safeguarding the quality of the bank’s assets while supporting strategic planning and decision-making through insightful analysis and forecasting. In the initial months, you will familiarize yourself with the bank’s existing credit policies and frameworks, evaluate current portfolios, and begin to develop relationships with key stakeholders. Key Responsibilities
- You will lead comprehensive credit risk management efforts, ensuring that customer creditworthiness and portfolio quality are meticulously evaluated across corporate and commercial sectors.
- Your role involves designing, implementing, and continuously refining credit risk policies and frameworks that align with the bank’s strategic objectives and compliance requirements.
- Within your delegated authority limits, you will evaluate, endorse, or reject credit applications, ensuring strict adherence to Group Mandates and established credit standards.
- Monitoring the performance of the credit portfolio will be crucial; you will analyze impairment patterns and identify early risk indicators through stress testing and scenario planning.
- Preparing detailed risk reports for senior management, risk committees, and regulators will inform critical decision-making and strategic direction.
- You will enhance internal controls and processes related to credit risk management, aiming for improved efficiency, accuracy, and timely escalation of significant risks or breaches.
- Fostering collaborative relationships with various internal teams, as well as external parties like clients and regulators, will facilitate transparent and informed credit decision-making.
- As a champion of risk awareness, you will promote a culture of continuous learning and professional development within your team and the broader bank community.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Demonstrable experience in managing credit risk across diverse corporate and commercial banking loan portfolios is essential, with a strong record in risk mitigation and portfolio health management.
- A deep understanding of operational risk management principles, credit policies, and the regulatory frameworks governing banking operations both in Uganda and internationally is required.
- Your analytical skills should be advanced, including competencies in financial statement analysis, credit scoring methodologies, and comprehensive risk reporting.
- Exceptional communication skills are necessary to effectively engage with stakeholders at all levels, from frontline teams to senior executives and external partners.
- Proven leadership capabilities are essential, particularly in mentoring talent and fostering high-performance teams aligned with organizational values and risk culture.
- Experience with credit risk analytics software and systems to support data-driven decision-making and reporting will be an asset in this role.
