About the Role
As a Senior Credit Manager at Standard Chartered in Kampala, you will play a pivotal role in the bank’s credit risk management strategy, ensuring that asset quality is upheld and risk-return decisions are judiciously made. This position is crucial for safeguarding the bank’s financial health and supporting strategic business planning through insightful forecasting. In your first few months, you will familiarize yourself with existing credit portfolios, engage with internal and external stakeholders, and work closely with your team to implement effective credit risk policies. You will lead initiatives aimed at continuous improvement in risk management practices while fostering a culture of accountability and integrity within the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- You will lead the comprehensive credit risk management activities, meticulously evaluating customer creditworthiness and ensuring portfolio quality across both corporate and commercial sectors of the bank.
- Your role involves designing and implementing credit risk policies that align with the bank’s strategic objectives, risk appetite, and compliance requirements.
- As part of your responsibilities, you will evaluate, endorse, or reject credit applications within your delegated authority limits, ensuring strict adherence to established credit standards.
- You will continuously monitor the performance of the credit portfolio, analyze impairment patterns, and identify early risk indicators to pre-empt potential credit challenges.
- Preparing detailed risk reports for senior management and risk committees will be essential, as these reports will inform decision-making and strategic direction.
- Enhancing internal controls and processes related to credit risk management will be a key focus, aimed at improving efficiency, accuracy, and timely escalation of material risks or breaches.
- Fostering collaborative relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders will be important to facilitate transparent credit decision-making and risk management.
- Championing a culture of risk awareness and professional development within your team and the wider bank community will contribute to the overall success of the operations.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in managing credit risk across diverse corporate and commercial banking loan portfolios, with a strong track record in risk mitigation.
- A deep understanding of operational risk management principles and regulatory frameworks governing banking operations in Uganda and internationally is required.
- Advanced analytical skills are essential, including proficiency in financial statement analysis and credit scoring methodologies.
- You should possess exceptional communication skills, enabling effective engagement with stakeholders at all levels, from frontline teams to senior executives.
- Proven leadership abilities are necessary, particularly in mentoring and developing high-performance teams aligned with organizational values.
- Experience with credit risk analytics software and systems is preferred to support data-driven decision-making and reporting.
