The United States Peace Corps is an independent agency of the U.S. government that trains and sends American volunteers to work in communities around the world. Established by President John F. Kennedy in March 1961, its mission is to promote world peace and friendship by helping interested countries meet their need for trained men and women, while promoting a better mutual understanding between Americans and other cultures.
