About the Role

The British High Commission in Kampala is seeking an Internal Political Officer to enhance its Migration and Human Rights portfolio. This pivotal role within the Political and Public Diplomacy team is essential for shaping UK policy through informed analysis and engagement with Ugandan stakeholders. In your first few months, you will immerse yourself in the local landscape of migration and human rights, establishing connections and understanding critical trends. Your contributions will directly influence high-level discussions and strategies aimed at improving human rights and migration management in Uganda.

Key Responsibilities

• You will support the High Commission’s leads on migration and human rights by providing timely analysis and advice that informs the broader UK foreign policy framework.
• Your role will involve cultivating and maintaining a diverse network of contacts, including government officials, UN agencies, NGOs, and academic experts, to effectively monitor trends in migration and human rights.
• Organising and attending meetings, workshops, and events will be crucial for deepening your understanding of key migration trends such as refugee flows, internal displacement, and labor migration patterns.
• You will be responsible for producing accurate, timely thematic reports and briefing notes for internal UK government use, ensuring that all outputs are clear, relevant, and adhere to FCDO standards.
• Monitoring and analysing human rights developments in Uganda will be part of your daily activities, focusing on issues such as freedom of expression, assembly, and gender-based violence, using credible sources for your assessments.
• Supporting the development of partnerships between the UK government and Ugandan stakeholders will help address shared priorities in migration management and human rights protection.
• Contributing to the preparation of ministerial visits, parliamentary briefings, and high-level dialogues by providing essential background research and talking points will be a critical aspect of your role.
• You will also assist in tracking Uganda’s compliance with international human rights obligations and migration-related conventions, helping to develop evidence-based policy recommendations.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A minimum of three years of professional experience in political analysis, public administration, international relations, or civil society advocacy work is required to succeed in this role.
• You should have a proven track record of delivering high-quality research, reports, or policy advice under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong analytical skills are essential, allowing you to synthesise complex information from multiple sources into clear, actionable insights.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are necessary, along with experience producing formal briefings for senior officials.
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across various sectors will be crucial for your success in this position.
