About the Role
The Tractor Driver position at Uganda Tea Corporation Limited (UTCL) is crucial for enhancing agricultural productivity within the company, which plays a significant role in the tea industry. Operating tractors for land preparation and planting, the driver ensures that the estate’s agricultural tasks are executed efficiently and safely. In the first few months, the driver will engage in hands-on training, familiarize themselves with the equipment, and understand the operational standards expected in a dynamic farming environment. The importance of this role extends beyond mere operation; it contributes to the overall quality of tea production, which is vital for both local consumption and international export.
Key Responsibilities
- The Tractor Driver will be responsible for operating various types of tractors to prepare land for tea planting and other agricultural activities, ensuring that tasks are completed in a timely manner.
- Conducting thorough pre-use inspections of the tractors is essential to identify any mechanical issues and ensure that equipment is in optimal working condition before operations begin.
- The driver will perform minor repairs and maintenance on the tractors, which involves basic troubleshooting and addressing minor mechanical problems to minimize downtime.
- Maintaining accurate logs of fuel consumption and mileage is part of the role, allowing for effective resource management and operational efficiency tracking.
- Ensuring compliance with safety protocols and operational guidelines is critical, as this helps to maintain a safe working environment for all team members on-site.
- Collaborating with agronomy teams and farm managers will be necessary to align field operations with the overall agricultural strategy of UTCL.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A minimum of Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent is required to ensure foundational educational competence.
- The candidate should possess a valid driving license, demonstrating their ability to operate heavy machinery safely and legally.
- Applicants must have at least three years of relevant experience as a tractor driver in a reputable agricultural organization, showcasing their familiarity with farming equipment.
- Proficiency in English is necessary to effectively communicate within the team and understand safety regulations and operational procedures.
- The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong attention to detail, particularly in conducting equipment inspections and logging operational data accurately.
