About the Role

The Cultural Digital Archivist position at the British Council Uganda Office plays a pivotal role in safeguarding Uganda’s rich cultural heritage through innovative digital archiving techniques. This role is essential as it bridges the gap between traditional practices and modern technology, ensuring the preservation of intangible cultural assets. In the initial months, the archivist will focus on establishing workflows for digitizing various cultural materials while collaborating closely with local stakeholders, including community elders and historians. The position also emphasizes ethical practices in archiving, ensuring that the representation of cultural materials is respectful and accurate.

Key Responsibilities

  • The Cultural Digital Archivist will develop and implement comprehensive digital archiving workflows tailored to diverse cultural materials, such as photographs, audio-visual records, and manuscripts.
  • Regular collaboration with community elders, historians, and cultural practitioners will be crucial for documenting intangible heritage accurately and respectfully.
  • Utilization of established metadata standards, such as Dublin Core and METS, will be essential to guarantee interoperability and accessibility of the digitized collections.
  • Conducting training sessions for local institutions on best practices in digital preservation will empower community members and enhance their archival capabilities.
  • The archivist will curate engaging online exhibitions and interactive platforms that encourage public interest and participation in cultural heritage.
  • Regular assessments and updates of the digital archiving processes will be necessary to adapt to technological advancements and evolving cultural preservation needs.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, Digital Archiving, Cultural Heritage Management, or a related field is required; a Master’s degree in Digital Humanities or Cultural Preservation is preferred.
  • Possessing 3–5 years of relevant experience in digital archiving, particularly within cultural or educational institutions, is essential.
  • Demonstrated success in managing large-scale digitization projects will be necessary to ensure effective execution of responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in digital asset management systems, such as CONTENTdm or Omeka, is expected for effective handling of digital collections.
  • A strong understanding of cultural sensitivity and ethical archiving practices is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the cultural materials.
