About the Role

The Tobacco Surveillance Officer position at the World Health Organization (WHO) is pivotal in advancing global public health initiatives, particularly in tobacco control. This role is critical for coordinating efforts to monitor tobacco use trends and supporting Member States in implementing effective health policies. Over the first few months, the successful candidate will engage in planning and executing surveys, analyzing data, and strengthening evidence-based tobacco control measures. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert technical assistance to Member States in the planning and execution of youth and adult tobacco-related surveys, ensuring comprehensive data collection and analysis.
  • Design survey tools, protocols, and systematic surveillance mechanisms to monitor tobacco usage, including newly emerging tobacco and nicotine products.
  • Support Member States in the data collection process for alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages, facilitating global health reporting.
  • Conduct thorough analyses of survey data to develop and implement effective data dissemination mechanisms that enhance understanding of tobacco use trends.
  • Collect and validate data necessary for WHO’s global reports on the tobacco epidemic and related trends in tobacco consumption.
  • Engage in regional tobacco control policy analysis, providing insights that inform public health strategies and interventions.
  • Create technical materials such as progress reports, fact sheets, presentations, and advocacy tools to support public health initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of manuscripts that document project lessons learned and disseminate findings within the public health community.
  • Participate actively in technical working groups and forums, contributing to discussions and reporting on tobacco-related issues from both a technical and administrative perspective.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years of professional experience in public health, epidemiology, or public policy at the national or international level is required.
  • Experience in managing or working with public health data related to risk factors, health outcomes, and health policies is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of public health surveillance and data analysis methodologies is essential for effective performance in this role.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Public Health, Epidemiology, or a closely related field is required, with an advanced degree being advantageous.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory, while proficiency in French is a plus and will aid in regional collaborations.
  • Experience working with WHO, other UN agencies, or international organizations, particularly in developing countries, is considered an asset.
