About the Role

As a Blood Bank Technologist at NYU Langone Medical Center, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of blood transfusions. This position is vital in maintaining high standards of quality in blood banking, which directly impacts patient care outcomes. In your first few months, you will engage in a comprehensive onboarding process to familiarize yourself with the laboratory’s procedures, equipment, and quality assurance protocols. You will collaborate with a dedicated team of professionals committed to providing the best care possible, enhancing both your technical skills and your understanding of blood banking systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the Blood Bank Quality Assurance Plan Self Assessment (BBQAPSA), adhering to the ten organizational standards known as Quality System Essentials based on current AABB standards.
  • Your role will involve performing and documenting necessary procedures to ensure the quality of testing, which includes regular quality control checks, instrument maintenance, and calibration.
  • It will be your responsibility to resolve both internal and external complaints, explaining and interpreting NYULH policies and Blood Bank Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with clarity and professionalism.
  • In managing inventory, you will maintain an adequate stock of blood products, ensuring that all items are ordered correctly and that shipments are accurately reconciled upon arrival.
  • You will inspect blood and components for quality acceptance, accession them into the HCLL system, and perform confirmatory testing while ensuring proper storage in controlled temperature devices.
  • During downtime, you will proactively engage in tasks such as running inventory reports and removing expired products, ensuring compliance with SOPs for blood selection and storage.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field is required for this position.
  • You should possess a valid certification as a Medical Technologist or equivalent, with a strong focus on blood banking or transfusion medicine.
  • Previous experience in a blood bank or clinical laboratory setting is preferred, typically requiring at least 2-3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong analytical skills are essential, as you will be responsible for interpreting test results and ensuring accuracy in reporting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are necessary for effectively collaborating with team members and addressing concerns from various stakeholders.
