About the Role
The Deckhand / Line Handler position at Amentum is essential for the successful operation of a unique U.S. Navy program on Diego Garcia. In this role, you will support sea vessel operations that transport crew members, passengers, and freight, ensuring their safety and comfort. As part of a dedicated team, your first few months will involve hands-on training where you will learn about marine operations, safety protocols, and customer service responsibilities. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop skills in maritime operations while contributing to critical infrastructure support.
Key Responsibilities
- You will assist in standing lookout watch in traffic areas, ensuring safety under various weather and sea conditions.
- Your daily tasks will include inspecting emergency equipment to verify their operational readiness and reporting any issues immediately.
- Attending to passenger needs will be a key part of your role, as you provide support and maintain cleanliness aboard the vessel.
- Delivering excellent customer service to travelers will enhance their experience while promoting a favorable image of the operation.
- Participating in all-hands drills and emergency exercises will prepare you for any potential safety situations.
- You will operate safety gates and loading ramps, maintaining security and order on the decks at all times.
- Reading gauges and fluid levels in the engine room, you will report any abnormalities to the captain, ensuring the smooth running of operations.
- Handling lines and securing barges to docks will be part of your responsibilities, critical for safe vessel operations.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A high school education or equivalent is preferred, equipping you with basic skills for this role.
- Experience or education may be required based on specific contracts or assignments related to the position.
- Proficiency in English is necessary, as you will need to comprehend instructions and safety procedures effectively.
- A valid passport with a minimum one-year validity at the time of hiring is essential for international assignments.
