About the Role

The Risk and Compliance Officer position at Olea Uganda Insurance Brokers Limited plays a critical role in ensuring that the company navigates the complex landscape of regulatory requirements. This role is vital for maintaining the integrity of Olea’s operations and fostering a culture of compliance within the organization. In your initial months, you will familiarize yourself with existing policies, assess current compliance practices, and begin building relationships across departments to promote a cohesive risk management strategy. As you engage with various stakeholders, you’ll gain insights into the insurance industry’s regulatory framework, which will be instrumental in your professional development.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will ensure that Olea adheres to all regulatory obligations set forth by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Financial Institutions Act (FIA), National Information Technology Authority (NITA), Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), and other relevant authorities.
  • Your role will involve reviewing and enhancing internal policies and procedures to ensure they align with the latest regulatory changes and best practices in the industry.
  • As part of your duties, you will meticulously analyze business documents to confirm they comply with legal and regulatory standards, thereby safeguarding the organization against potential risks.
  • Coordinating regulatory reporting will be a key task, where you will monitor deadlines and guarantee the timely submission of all statutory returns, ensuring Olea stays in good standing with regulatory bodies.
  • You will design and implement effective risk management frameworks and internal controls that are practical and beneficial to the organization’s operations.
  • Your responsibilities will also include conducting internal audits to assess compliance with both company policies and external regulations, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Building a strong risk and compliance culture will be essential, which includes training and empowering colleagues rather than merely enforcing rules.
  • Additionally, you will be tasked with identifying compliance issues early on and developing actionable plans to address them promptly.
  • As the department evolves, you will take on various projects that align with both departmental and organizational goals.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Law, Insurance, Banking, Risk Management, or a related field is essential for this role.
  • At least two years of relevant experience in a compliance or risk management role, preferably within the insurance sector, is expected.
  • A solid understanding of risk and compliance principles is critical, with knowledge specific to the insurance industry being highly advantageous.
  • Professional certifications in Risk Management, Compliance, Internal Audit, or Insurance will be considered a strong asset.
  • You should possess strong critical thinking skills and the confidence to communicate effectively at all organizational levels.
  • A collaborative and adaptable mindset, along with a genuine enthusiasm for continuous learning and process improvement, is crucial for success in this role.
