The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is seeking a full-time Study Medical Doctor to join the Meningitis Research Team in Kampala. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive clinical care and medical support to research participants involved in the COAST, PLATFORM-CM, and BPaLMZ studies while ensuring adherence to research protocols, ethical standards, and patient safety requirements.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

  • Recruit, screen, enroll, and provide clinical management for study participants in both outpatient and inpatient care settings.
  • Obtain informed consent from participants while working closely with the research team and ensuring ethical research practices.
  • Conduct study-related clinical procedures, including performing lumbar punctures where required.
  • Monitor participants for adverse events and provide appropriate medical management to ensure their safety.
  • Maintain accurate medical records, study documentation, and complete case report forms (CRFs) in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, study protocols, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, participate in patient reviews, clinical rounds, and research meetings.
  • Support community engagement and outreach activities as required by the research program.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or an equivalent medical qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Must have valid registration with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC).
  • Previous experience in clinical research, infectious disease management, or related medical fields is an added advantage.
  • Certification or training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong clinical evaluation, diagnosis, and patient management skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail in medical documentation and completion of research records.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare and research teams.
  • Strong understanding of research ethics, confidentiality, and participant protection.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
