The Assistant Project Officer (APO) position at Trees for the Future is a vital role aimed at enhancing agroforestry practices among smallholder farmers in the Lake Victoria Watershed region of Uganda. This position exists to support the implementation of the Forest Garden Approach, which empowers farmers to restore their land and improve their livelihoods sustainably. In the first few months, the APO will engage with local farmers, assist in training sessions, and gather data for monitoring progress, all while fostering community relationships. As part of a dedicated team, you will contribute to meaningful changes that benefit both the environment and local economies.
Key Responsibilities
The APO will scout and document new potential project areas, actively recruiting and mobilizing farmers for the Lake Victoria Watershed Agroforestry Carbon Project.
Facilitating dialogue and consultative meetings with stakeholders and farmers is crucial, as this will help organize farmers into effective groups for collaboration.
Providing training and capacity building on the Forest Garden Approach will equip farmers with the necessary skills to implement sustainable agricultural practices.
Conducting field visits is essential for providing ongoing extension services and coordinating the establishment of Forest Gardens, ensuring farmers receive hands-on support.
Monthly data collection and participation in regular Field Area Measurements and Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) activities will be key in assessing project impact and progress.
The APO will also maintain accurate farmer records using the TREES Taroworks data collection app, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
Organizing monthly Lead Farmer meetings will allow the APO to share best practices and provide valuable advice on Forest Garden farming techniques.
Lastly, the role involves sensitizing farmers about carbon contract requirements, administering these contracts, and monitoring compliance to enhance their understanding of the carbon market.
Requirements & Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Environmental Science, or a related field is preferred for this role, ensuring a foundational understanding of agroforestry principles.
Previous experience working in community development or agricultural projects, ideally within Uganda, will be beneficial for understanding local contexts and challenges.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as the role involves coordinating with farmers and stakeholders regularly.
Familiarity with data collection tools and methodologies, including experience with digital applications, will be important for effective record-keeping and reporting.
The ability to work independently and as part of a team, displaying a proactive approach to problem-solving and project management, is essential for success.
