About the Role

The Field Operations Manager at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) plays a crucial role in maintaining the operational efficiency of the Ishasha area within the Queen Elizabeth Protected Area. This position is essential for ensuring that conservation efforts are effectively supported through robust logistics, procurement, and infrastructure management. Over the first few months, the manager will engage with the local teams, familiarize themselves with existing operations, and begin implementing strategic plans that align with the conservation goals of WCS. This role is not just about managing resources; it’s about leading a dedicated team to ensure the sustainability of wildlife habitats in challenging environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • The Field Operations Manager will develop and implement annual operational plans and budgets that align with the park’s strategic objectives, ensuring that all activities are executed efficiently and effectively.
  • They will support department heads in overcoming operational challenges, providing timely advice to facilitate smooth workflows within the team.
  • This role involves ensuring adherence to WCS’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), requiring a meticulous approach to every operational aspect under their control.
  • Coordinating with Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) staff is essential for planning and executing field operations, ensuring collaborative efforts in conservation initiatives.
  • The manager is responsible for preparing and submitting detailed operational reports to the Sector Manager, which will include KPI summaries and progress updates against the operations plan.
  • Overseeing procurement processes is a vital function of this role, ensuring that all purchasing activities align with WCS SOPs while maintaining efficiency and accountability.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Applicants should have a minimum of 5 years of experience in conservation field operations management, preferably in remote or protected areas.
  • A degree in Environmental Science, Logistics, or a related field is required to ensure a solid foundation in the principles of conservation and resource management.
  • Proven experience in managing procurement and supply chain processes is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency.
  • Strong leadership skills are essential, as this role involves managing a team of logistics, procurement, and support staff.
  • Excellent communication abilities are necessary for effective coordination with internal teams and external stakeholders.
