About the Role

Simone’s Kids is on the lookout for a dedicated Finance Assistant to enhance the financial operations within their educational institution located in Kampala. This role is crucial as it underpins the organization’s commitment to providing educational opportunities and welfare for children. In your first few months, you will immerse yourself in daily accounting tasks, collaborating closely with the finance team to ensure financial accuracy and compliance with budgets. You will gain firsthand experience in managing financial records and contribute to the mission of a nonprofit focused on child education.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will be responsible for accurately recording and updating student fee payments in the accounting system on a daily basis, ensuring that all transactions are documented correctly.
  • Your role will include issuing official receipts for all financial collections, maintaining meticulous filing documentation to support transparency and accountability.
  • You will engage in polite communication with parents and guardians to follow up on outstanding fees, fostering a respectful relationship that encourages timely payments.
  • Processing petty cash payments will be a key duty, which requires adherence to the school’s established financial policies and procedures.
  • Timely preparation and secure deposit of cash and cheques into the school bank account will be part of your core tasks to maintain financial integrity.
  • Assisting with monthly bank reconciliations will involve comparing records to identify and resolve discrepancies, ensuring that all financial information is accurate.
  • You will be tasked with entering all financial transactions into QuickBooks, ensuring that data is both accurate and complete.
  • Maintaining orderly and up-to-date ledgers and supporting documents will be necessary for upcoming audits, and you will help prepare payment vouchers and journal entries.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A minimum of Grade V Diploma in Finance, Accounting, or a closely related field from a recognized institution is required for this position.
  • At least four years of progressive experience in finance and accounting roles is essential to ensure you can meet the demands of this position.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks is crucial, as it will be a primary tool in performing daily accounting tasks and generating financial reports.
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, is necessary for efficient communication and data management.
  • Excellent organizational skills are a must, as you will need to manage multiple tasks and maintain detailed financial records.
