About the Role

The Senior Battery Engineer position at Soleil Power in Kampala, Uganda is a key role within East Africa’s pioneering lithium-ion battery production company. This position is essential for driving innovation in the rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage system (ESS) markets. As a Senior Engineer, you will collaborate with a skilled team to lead the design, development, and optimization of battery solutions tailored for various applications. In your initial months, you will immerse yourself in existing projects, provide hands-on guidance, and help shape the strategic direction of battery development initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will lead the engineering team in developing and optimizing lithium-ion battery solutions specifically designed for both stationary energy storage and e-mobility applications.
  • Creating and maintaining detailed CAD models for various battery designs will be an integral part of your role, supporting the ongoing development efforts.
  • Your oversight of all aspects of battery prototyping and assembly will ensure that the final products meet quality and performance standards.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and environmental standards related to lithium-ion battery manufacturing is crucial for maintaining industry credibility and safety.
  • By creating work plans for engineering staff, you will facilitate the timely achievement of engineering objectives and product development milestones.
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment will be your responsibility, along with ensuring that all equipment is properly maintained for optimal performance.
  • You will also support team management functions, providing mentorship and career development opportunities for your direct reports.
  • Developing and nurturing strong relationships with key suppliers and industry partners will help keep Soleil Power at the forefront of battery technology advancements.
  • Staying informed about the latest developments in lithium-ion battery technology will enable you to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and innovation in battery solutions.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A deep understanding of lithium-ion battery chemistry and materials is essential for success in this role.
  • Proven expertise in battery pack design and assembly, with a strong focus on mechanical, electrical, and thermal considerations, is required.
  • Experience with high voltage battery systems, including multiple levels of battery control architecture, is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with evaluating Battery Management System (BMS) hardware, firmware, and software will be crucial for ensuring system reliability.
  • A background in embedded systems development will be beneficial for integrating BMS into Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
  • Proficiency in CAD software, such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, for designing battery packs and related components is expected.
  • Strong data analytical skills for interpreting test data and optimizing battery performance will be essential for improving product outcomes.
