About the Role

The British Council is seeking a dynamic Head of English and School Education to spearhead its initiatives aimed at enhancing educational outcomes in Uganda. This role is crucial in addressing the challenges faced by the country’s education sector, particularly in improving English language proficiency and foundational skills among students and teachers. In the initial months, the selected candidate will engage with local and global teams to integrate strategic objectives into impactful programs while establishing partnerships that promote educational excellence. The role also involves navigating the complexities of working in refugee-hosting districts, requiring a strong emphasis on equitable access to education for vulnerable populations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with leaders across global and local teams to transform corporate strategy into a high-impact program that meets organizational goals while adapting to local market needs.
  • Analyze commercial performance data to formulate a profitable annual business plan for the English and School Education portfolio, ensuring alignment with global ambitions and monitoring progress against set targets.
  • Ensure that ESE projects provide measurable benefits to the UK through strategic partnerships with the UK education sector, effectively leveraging grant funding.
  • Deliver inspirational leadership that embodies the British Council’s values, fostering an inclusive environment that empowers staff to strive for excellence.
  • Define the vision and direction for the English and School Education initiatives, leading the development of high-quality programs to enhance long-term business development capabilities.
  • Directly manage the in-country ESE team, focusing on performance management, staff motivation, and creating an environment conducive to achieving success.
  • Oversee the quality assurance of bids, tenders, and proposals, sign-off on documentation, and make informed decisions regarding pursuit and contracting opportunities.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in Education, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred, demonstrating a strong foundation for strategic leadership.
  • At least 7 years of experience in a leadership role within the education sector, showcasing a proven ability to manage complex educational programs and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated expertise in business development and project management, particularly within international or development contexts.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of inspiring diverse teams and fostering collaborative partnerships.
  • Knowledge of educational policies and practices in Uganda, particularly in relation to teacher training and student learning outcomes.
