About the Role

The Director of Finance and Human Resources at Amazima Ministries is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing financial operations and human resource management within the organization. Located in Jinja, Uganda, this position involves collaborating with various departments to ensure efficient financial practices and compliance with regulations. In the initial months, you will focus on understanding the existing financial systems, building relationships with team members, and aligning departmental goals with Amazima’s mission. This role not only impacts the financial health of the organization but also fosters a culture of financial literacy among staff, enhancing overall organizational effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Finance team, which includes two direct reports and two indirect reports, to guarantee smooth and efficient departmental operations.
  • Oversee the accurate recording, classification, and summarization of accounting transactions in Sage Intacct, ensuring adherence to established procedures.
  • Ensure that all financial reporting and record-keeping activities comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Review and authorize all payments, making sure that proper documentation and approvals are secured before any funds are disbursed.
  • Monthly review and approval of balance sheet account reconciliations to maintain the integrity of financial statements.
  • Manage the month-end close process meticulously, ensuring that checklists are followed and deadlines are consistently met.
  • Provide each department with monthly Budget vs Actual reporting and variance analysis, highlighting financial performance and operational efficiency.
  • Generate and deliver monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to the Stateside Finance team for consolidation and analysis.
  • Address complex accounting inquiries and support the team in navigating specialized financial transactions.
  • Oversee the monthly payroll process for all staff, ensuring compliance with Ugandan labor laws and tax regulations.
  • Participate in annual external audit meetings for Ugandan entities, ensuring timely resolution and implementation of any recommendations.
  • Supervise the Internal Audit function, supporting the team in conducting thorough internal reviews.
  • Coordinate the annual forecasting and budgeting processes, gathering input from department heads to create comprehensive financial plans.
  • Build and maintain relationships with all departments, providing guidance on finance processes to enhance financial literacy and compliance.
  • Act as the primary liaison with the Stateside Finance team regarding financial reporting and payments made from the U.S. entity.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field from a recognized university is essential.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting roles, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing human resources functions, including recruitment, employee relations, and compliance with labor laws.
  • Strong knowledge of financial software and systems, particularly Sage Intacct, is highly desirable.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide actionable insights.
  • Proficiency in communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration with diverse teams and stakeholders.
