About the Role

The Community Manager for the Journalist Protection Program at Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) plays a pivotal role in fostering a safe and supportive environment for journalists navigating complex media landscapes. This freelance position, running from November 2026 to June 2027, will be based in Kampala, Uganda, and will involve up to 120 working days depending on project needs. In the initial months, you will immerse yourself in understanding the local media context, engaging with journalists, and establishing vital communication channels to support the program’s objectives. Your work will directly impact the resilience and sustainability of journalism in Uganda, making it a critical and rewarding endeavor.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will develop and implement community engagement strategies that effectively connect journalists with support resources and training opportunities offered by MiCT.
  • Regularly organize workshops and training sessions aimed at enhancing the skills and safety of journalists, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle challenges in their field.
  • Act as a liaison between MiCT and local journalists, facilitating open communication to better understand their needs and challenges.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of community initiatives, providing feedback and recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Gather data and insights on the state of journalism in Uganda, contributing to reports that inform stakeholders and guide future programming.
  • Collaborate with local and international partners to amplify the reach and impact of the Journalist Protection Program, enhancing its visibility and effectiveness.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A degree in communications, journalism, social sciences, or a related field is preferred to demonstrate a solid foundation in relevant theories and practices.
  • At least 3 years of experience in community management, journalism, or media support, showcasing a strong understanding of the media landscape.
  • Proven ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including journalists, NGOs, and local communities, fostering meaningful relationships.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with proficiency in English; knowledge of local languages is an advantage.
