About the Role
The Country Finance Director at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) plays a pivotal role in steering the financial health of the organization’s Uganda program. This position is crucial for ensuring that financial strategies are aligned with both organizational goals and the specific needs of the local context. In the first few months, you will dive into understanding the existing financial frameworks, engaging with local finance teams, and assessing current operations to identify areas for improvement. You will lead budgeting processes and establish strong financial management practices that uphold compliance and transparency, thereby directly contributing to the conservation efforts that benefit both wildlife and local communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic financial leadership for the Country Program, ensuring that financial practices align with WCS’s global objectives and donor requirements.
- Lead the development of annual institutional and project budgets, ensuring that they reflect realistic projections and full cost recovery for sustainability.
- Advise the Country Director and Senior Management Team by conducting regular financial analyses to support effective programmatic and operational planning.
- Supervise financial management across WCS programs and collaborating partners, ensuring accountability and minimizing financial risks through robust monitoring and reporting systems.
- Engage actively in fundraising efforts, including grant proposal writing and pitching value propositions to potential donors, both private and governmental.
- Ensure compliance with WCS’s global financial policies, national legislation, and donor obligations while safeguarding the organization’s assets.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; a Master’s degree or relevant certification (e.g., CPA, ACCA) is highly desirable.
- At least 7 years of progressive experience in financial management, with a focus on non-profit or conservation sectors being an advantage.
- Proven expertise in budget development, financial forecasting, and strategic financial planning within a complex organization.
- Strong understanding of compliance and regulatory frameworks affecting financial operations in Uganda.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively liaise with internal teams, donors, and external stakeholders.
