About the Role

The Short-Term Consultancy for an Author/Illustrator plays a pivotal role in the Scaling Urban Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for Climate Adaptation in sub-Saharan Africa (SUNCASA) project, which aims to enhance climate resilience and promote social inclusivity across key cities. This position is critical as it seeks to translate essential climate adaptation messages into an engaging comic book format targeted at children and adolescents. Over the first few months, the consultant will work closely with project teams to understand the project’s objectives, develop creative concepts, and produce vibrant illustrations that resonate with young audiences. This role not only fosters environmental awareness but also empowers the next generation to take an active role in climate action and ecosystem protection.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive outline for the comic book that effectively communicates SUNCASA’s key messages on nature-based solutions and climate adaptation.
  • Create engaging storylines and relatable characters that reflect the cultural contexts of the cities involved, namely Dire Dawa, Kigali, and Johannesburg.
  • Produce high-quality illustrations that complement the narrative and enhance the educational value of the comic book.
  • Incorporate interactive activities within the comic that encourage reader engagement and facilitate learning about environmental stewardship.
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders to ensure that the content aligns with SUNCASA’s goals of gender equality and social inclusion.
  • Seek feedback from local partners and target audiences during the development process to refine the comic book and ensure its effectiveness as an educational tool.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A background in graphic design, illustration, or a related field, with demonstrable experience in creating educational materials.
  • Strong storytelling skills that can translate complex environmental concepts into relatable narratives for children.
  • Familiarity with climate change issues and nature-based solutions, particularly in the context of sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Proficiency in using digital illustration tools and software to produce high-quality visuals.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including local communities and project teams.
