About the Role
The Community Engagement Coordinator plays a vital role in fostering community involvement in conservation efforts within the Ishasha region of the Queen Elizabeth Protected Area. This position, under the guidance of the Rights & Communities Manager, is crucial for implementing community conservation initiatives that directly impact local populations. In the initial months, you will spend significant time engaging with communities, conducting consultations, and building relationships with local stakeholders. Your work will not only help mitigate human-wildlife conflict but also empower communities to actively participate in the management of their natural resources.
Key Responsibilities
- You will plan and execute community engagement activities that align with the community conservation and social safeguards plans, ensuring that they are tailored to the needs of local populations.
- Building strong relationships with community members, local organizations, and civil society groups will be essential to foster collaboration and trust.
- Your role will involve ensuring the participation of diverse groups, including women and youth, in park-related activities, thus promoting inclusivity.
- Leading consultations with communities to gather feedback and insights related to project activities will be a key part of your responsibilities.
- You will support the implementation of grievance redress mechanisms, ensuring that community voices are heard and addressed effectively.
- To aid in mitigating human-wildlife conflict, you will engage with communities to promote understanding and develop cooperative solutions.
- Tracking the effectiveness of community engagement efforts will be necessary to continuously improve strategies and outcomes.
- Providing targeted training and support to community members will help build their capacity to engage in protected area management issues.
- You will implement incentive programs, such as wildlife scholarships, ensuring transparency and community involvement in participant selection.
- Conducting socio-economic research and monitoring will help assess the impact of conservation initiatives in line with established plans.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in social, rural, or environmental sciences is essential, while a Master’s degree in a related field is desirable.
- You should have at least five years of experience working with rural or remote communities in roles focused on social mobilization or community engagement.
- Proven expertise in applying participatory methods in community settings will be critical for success in this role.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to effectively engage with diverse community groups and stakeholders.
- Experience in managing projects or initiatives that require community collaboration will be beneficial.
