About the Role

The Community Manager for the Journalist Protection Program at Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) plays a crucial role in supporting at-risk journalists in Uganda. This position is essential for ensuring that fellows receive necessary assistance while they continue their impactful work in the media landscape. In the initial months, the Community Manager will focus on establishing relationships with fellows, coordinating logistical support, and creating safety measures tailored to their needs. This role not only fosters a supportive community but also enhances the resilience of media professionals operating in challenging environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • The Community Manager will coordinate all contractual engagements with the fellows, ensuring that agreements are clearly understood and fulfilled.
  • Managing stipend transfers will be a key responsibility, providing fellows with timely financial support crucial for their work.
  • Supporting alumni legal and safety needs will involve assessing individual requirements and facilitating appropriate assistance.
  • The role requires the organization of logistical support for relocation, including securing accommodations and co-working spaces as needed.
  • Creating and managing safety measures for up to 20 journalists involves developing protocols that prioritize their well-being and security.
  • The Community Manager will also organize at least one community meet-up, fostering a network among fellows and alumni to share experiences and strategies.
  • Regular check-ins with MiCT’s Project Manager and Project Officer will ensure alignment with project goals and ongoing support for fellows.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Proven experience in project management, particularly in media development projects, is essential for this role.
  • Established connections within the regional media landscape and community are critical for effective networking and support.
  • Strong community management skills are necessary to engage with fellows and alumni effectively.
  • A large network of service providers, especially those offering integration and legal support, will enhance the role’s effectiveness.
  • Understanding the media landscape throughout Uganda is vital, as well as familiarity with the immigration landscape in the country.
