General Summary:
The African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data-Intensive Sciences (ACE Uganda) is offering one (1) internship opportunity under the SHEDS Project, in collaboration with the Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS), University of California San Francisco (UCSF).
The successful intern will gain hands-on experience by participating in real-world, data-driven health research projects while developing practical skills in information technology, systems administration, and research support.

Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of server hardware and software under guidance.
- Support the management of network servers and technology systems while learning from experienced administrators.
- Assist in creating and managing user accounts for ACE HPC users as directed by the systems team.
- Provide first-level technical support to ACE HPC users and escalate complex issues when necessary.
- Monitor system performance and support routine maintenance activities.
- Participate in troubleshooting technical issues, system errors, and service interruptions.
- Assist in implementing cybersecurity measures, including user access controls, backups, and firewall configurations.
- Support system upgrades, software updates, and technology improvements.
- Develop knowledge and skills in training users on new technologies such as Slurm through mentorship.
- Assist in creating and updating technical documentation, including manuals, wikis, and IT policies.
- Participate in cyberinfrastructure and change management meetings for learning and documentation purposes.
- Provide technical support during workshops and assist bioinformatics trainers and lecturers.
- Perform any other assigned duties to support ACE Uganda operations.
Academic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field from a recognized institution.
Person Specification:
The ideal candidate should be:
- A recent graduate (within the last one year) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- Proficient in Linux/Unix operating systems and Python programming.
- Familiar with R and JavaScript programming languages.
- Knowledgeable in Windows and Linux operating systems.
- Familiar with server hardware and system administration concepts.
- Knowledgeable about cloud computing platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
- Understanding of computer networking concepts, including Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN).
